If you are looking for a motorhome, there are lots of decisions to be made, starting with what type will suit you best. Then you can move on to what manuafacturer, what year, used or new, and so on. But it all starts with what type of motorhome will fit your needs.
Actually just about any vehicle that allows you to have dining and sleeping quarters in it could technically be referred to as a motorhome, but there are four major classifications that are most easily recognized and that is the Class A, B, C, and bus conversion. Let's explain what the main characteristics are of each of these classes.
- The Class A is probably what comes to mind when most people think of a motorhome, and they can range in price from $75,000 to over $1 million. They resemble a bus more than the other smaller classes and they are easily used as a permanent home. A lot of folks use these motorhomes to travel throughout the country in comfort and style. They usually vary between 30 - 45 feet and have separate living, dining, bath, and sleeping quarters all built right in. The options list can be quite extensive because there is more room to work with in these coaches. You can get refrigerators, gps navigation, washer-dryers, self-levelers, satellite TV, and much more, all depending on your budget and how much you want to spend. They usually are built on their own special chassis, but are really only suitable for paved road driving and park camping.
- The Class B motorhome is the smallest of the bunch and is usually built on a truck/van chassis. It often has dining, bath, and sleeping quarters too, but they are much smaller accomodations than the Class A has. Because of it's smaller profile, the Class B is usually more flexible in where it can go however, and some limited off-roading can done with it. They usually cost around $45,000 - $85,000 and come in lengths from 20 - 30+ feet. It is ideal for short trips with just a few people.
- The Class C motorhome is sort of in between the Class A and B. It is usually built on a van chassis, but can come in longer lengths than the Class B, but not as long as most Class A motorhomes. Since it has extra room, it is a good choice for more extended trips although living in it permanently may present challenges to most people. It is also more flexible in where it can travel than the Class A though, and so many families tend to choose this size of motorhome for vacation trips. They usually cost from $50,000 to $125,000.
- The bus conversion is a motorhome all to itself, and can be among the most expensive motorhomes on the market, ranging on up to $2 million. Since they are built on a bus chassis everything about them tends to be more heavy-duty. However, they can also be more expensive to repair for that reason. But for folks who spend a lot of time on the road a good bus conversion can make life much easier and travel very reliable. They are often used by celebrities and traveling entertainment folks as their home away from home and can sport some pretty impressive luxury features.
